Review: Rad Pizza Shop
On perhaps York's foodiest thoroughfare, Neapolitan-style pizzas are being created that are impressive in taste and texture.
With much enthusiasm and a greedy desire to return, I present a selection of photos from a recent visit to Angel on the Green for the Neapolitan-style sourdough pizzas produced by the folk at Rad Pizza Shop.
Inspired by the famous Calabrian stew of the same name, the peperonata pizza I ordered afforded me a great deal of comfort on a nippy February evening with its tangle of near-jammy, oil-slicked peppers, milky fior di latte, and smoky, peppercorn-punctured salame. The tomatoes on the pizza base - San Marzano, naturally - distinguished themselves too, as their concentrated sweet flavour acted as the most natural bedfellow for the peppers. My vegetarian compadre (and please excuse my eclectic muddling of Italian cuisine and Spanish designations) opted for a gutsy capricciosa, teeming with briny black olives and nutty, slightly bitter artichokes. A delight from soft centre to crispy cornicione.
FOODIE QUOTE OF THE DAY:
‘‘I am a glutton. I'll eat whatever is there. Pizza. I love hot dogs anywhere. I've got nothing against any of that. If I feel like eating, I eat. I don't feel guilty about it at all.’’
- Jacques Pepin
